Every parent in this modern world wants to involve their children at young age into STEM fields ( STEM means Science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields ). The marker is fed up of “innovative” approaches towards children or I should rather say parents to convince them that this product is “The ONE and only for your kid”.
There are a lot of computer kits – I’m talking about DIY computers for children. I wrote couple of articles about computer kit topic, they are focusing on benefits, usage, pros and cons of each computer kit – if you are interested to read, just click on links below and every link will take you to an article.
But what is the best computer kit for girls?
After looking what is the perfect computer kit for girl – lets be honest, boys are far more into computing than girls – I came across Boolean box, and is aiming to girls population. And it truly is the best computer kit for girls.
This article “Boolean box review” I will present you everything you need to know about this computer kit, how it works, what is in the box, pros and cons. Stay tuned.
What Is A Boolean Box?
Boolean box was crowdfunded in kick starter. The company was accepted and they started to make kits for every home.
Boolean box is a computer kit aiming for girls ( and boys) to teach them how to code, build, invent and animate – company’s focus is to encourage girls to get interested in STEM. They can also learn electronics with electric circuits.
It is self – contained DIY computer, all it has to be done, when you open the box is to connect mouse, keyboard and Raspebbry Pi 3 together and then connect through HDMI cable to your TV. And the learning begins.
Raspberry Pi is a well-known small but strong computer with an affordable price ( Raspberry Pi computer costs about 30 – $40 ).
Micro SD card needs to be plugin into Raspberry Pi because it has pre-installed software.
The first thing you do, after you assemble computer together and connect it into TV, you start to learn a Scratch programming language. Scratch was invented in MIT and basically you program is block-based. You put blocks together and you can make interactive stories, videos, puzzles and games.
After you conquer Scratch you dive into Phyton or Java programming language. But it is not overwhelming for children, they are learning basics of Phyton programming language through a game of Minecraft ( very popular game these days).
What Is In The Boolean Box?
Like any computer kit, Boolean box has a lot of parts, and those are:
- Raspberry PI 3 computer
- Wireless keyboard
- Wireless mouse
- Custom case
- Power supply
- PI GPIO pin to breadboard connector
- Breadboard for building electronics projects
- 8GB SD card with pre-installed OS
- HDMI cable
- Very reasonable price ( $170 )
- Finally a product that the focus is to encourage girls in STEM fields
- Great STEM toy
- Endless hours of fun
- People who bought Boolean box are very satisfied with a product
- It is for boys as well
- Good approach to start learning how to code
- Easy to build a computer
- You can modify Minecraft – how cool is that
- Supposedly you don’t need an Internet connection to use a computer, but if you want to learn more, you must download projects – you do need internet connection
- If you don’t own an extra TV or Screen, than your TV will be unavailable when the computer will be used
About Boolean Box
My rating: 7 out of 10
Where to buy: AMAZON
Age recommendation: 8+
it is overall a great product with great value. It really teaches children ( not just girls – boys as well, I’ll get to that later ) about programming with really easy to understand Scratch programming language. Even coding with Phyton is not that hard, and once you understand and learn how all works, it is not as hard as it sounds.
Now I have to stop with the fact that it was made for girls. I really don’t understand what differs that computer kit from other computer kits. OK so the box itself is more girlish but still – no clarification was put why is it for girls. Almost every computer kit that is made to learn children how to code has a Raspberry Pi computer. And technique with drag and drop coding is almost a standard when you buy any computer kit for kids. I know they put a lot of research into the fact what would motivate girls to learn how to code and program and build an electric circuit. But I can’t see it, to be honest.
My primary option which computer kit would I get my children is a Kano touch tablet. Price of it is about $270 and you don’t need a TV because you get, beside Raspberry Pi and a keyboard, a 10-inch touch screen and a plastic case, so it looks like a real computer. Plus it is an award-winning computer kit and it’s design is very beautiful. Like mentioned before I wrote a review about Kano touch tablet, and if you are interested to read it, just click on the link below, and it will take you to a review:
So beside Kano touch computer kit, Boolean box comes close in second place. I read ton of reviews of satisfied buyers, and Boolean is doing amazing job. Of course parents bought Boolean box for their daughters, and supposedly girls are rocking it.
